Description Of The Poem Sunflowers - 954 Words
Sunflowers Doreen put down the watering can and wrinkled her nose. ââ¬Å"What a putrid smell, is that a blocked drain or something? I havenââ¬â¢t noticed any funny smells coming from the house lately, have you?â⬠Margaret shook her head, ââ¬Å"I remember it smelt a bit off out here the other day, but I thought maybe it was the drain, I did have a look but everything seemed fine. It could be sewage I suppose.â⬠She went back into the chicken shed to feed the hens again, even they looked morose, seemingly aware the June was no longer around.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know how she managed all of this by herself,â⬠said Doreen, as she watered the last of the sunflowers. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a full time job in itself. Seriously, this smell is making me wretch, come over here and see for yourself. Iââ¬â¢ve never smelt anything like it before.â⬠Margaret walked over to the end of the garden. ââ¬Å"Yes, I see what you mean now, itââ¬â¢s definitely coming from those sunflowers, they smell as though theyââ¬â¢ve gone bad. I didnââ¬â¢t think they went off in that way though.â⬠ââ¬Å"They just look so listless.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wonder if the soil has gone bad,â⬠said Doreen, ââ¬Å"they look diseased, theyââ¬â¢ll contaminate the soil and everything around them will die if we donââ¬â¢t take them up now. Do you think we should do that?â⬠Margaret shrugged, ââ¬Å"they do seem to be attracting an awful lot of flies.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s unsightly,â⬠said Doreen, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure June would have done the same.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, god, yes.
